Outreach to the Services remains a highlight of the Ombudsman's role. We can only achieve our goal of a better Service Complaints system for all personnel by working closely with the Services, and these visits are critical for building relationships and monitoring progress in support of that goal.

That's why SCOAF were really pleased to visit RAF Halton earlier this week where the Ombudsman conducted a focus group with RAF personnel. This enabled aviators of all rank to speak about their experience of using the Service Complaints system and hear their thoughts on areas for improvement.

We recognise the great work that the RAF has done to improve their personnel's experience within the Service Complaints system, including the creation of online complaints forms and virtual complaint hearings. While this was echoed by personnel at the focus group, we are aware that there are still improvements to be made relating especially to the experience of BAME and Female aviators.

SCOAF will continue to work with the RAF, and the other single Services, to ensure improvements. We remain more motivated than ever to work with Defence to help build a better Service Complaints system.

We would like to thank the RAF personnel who joined us at our focus group, your stories provide us with invaluable evidence when we release our next Annual Report in 2023.

We also want to thank RAF Halton for allowing the Ombudsman to conduct this focus group, and we hope to make an official visit there again soon.
